

He had Miyagi in his skin, in his mind, in his consciousness. ‘That magic that happened on the screen happened the first day we picked up the pages. Speaking about this period of his life to LA Times in 1986, he joked they were: ‘a Japanese family running a Chinese restaurant in a black neighbourhood, with a clientele of blacks, Filipinos and everybody else who didn’t fit in any of the other neighbourhoods.’ When his family were released after the war ended in 1945, Morita moved back to California with his family and together they opened a Chinese restaurant.

Throughout his childhood, he had a serious of life threatening illnesses and conditions, including spinal tuberculosis at the age of two that required him to live in a full body cast and seek nearly 10 years of treatment to ensure he could even be able to walk.Īt the age of 11, he was moved to Arizona to live in an internment camp with his family in the midst of World War II, orchestrated by the government after the attack on Pearl Harbour.
